Great music. Great lyrics. Great performance. Great video.
Tina Turner at her best.
Enjoy !
Some boys got the look of a greek Adonis
Some boys try to talk you off your feet
Some boys think they're gods gift to woman
Some boys think theyre sweet enough to eat
Try to change the habit of a lifetime
Don't even try
'Cause when you cut down deeper than the icing
You realise
What you get is what you see
Ain't nothing more to it
And if you wanna love a woman like me
It takes a man to do it
If what you get is what you see
Then I don't want your kind of love
A man is just a man
Some guys got lips that you can't help kissing
And some guys got a smile you can't resist
Some guys gotta build a reputation
They just wanna add you to the list
You got a lot of physical attraction
I can't deny
But can you guarantee me satisfaction
While I'm still waiting, waiting, waiting....
So let me see your cards on the table
Before I buy
I always read the writing on the label
So give me reason to believe
There's more to you than meets the eye

P.S. 13 March:
People who know me well have been wondering why I've been writing so much about sex lately, as it was something I didn't do before. Well, it's just another topic for me, there's nothing more to it. The "Sunday series" is my way of breaking the taboo through humour. I'll be ending it next Sunday, exactly with a sketch showing how much people (specially men) are afraid of talking about sex, but actually think about it all the time.
As you all know, I'm a teacher of literature, a profession our society considers irrelevant. Unfortunately, it's not so, because to understand a text is of the utmost importance for our daily living. Therefore, please allow me to guide you through the lyrics above, so that you can really get their meaning.
The context:
Tina Turner was a battered woman, hurt, raped, humiliated daily, for years. To think she's looking for a relationship of no consequence is idiotic. She's seeing all these attractive men, supposedly interested in her, and making a statement she'll not be fooled by appearances. She wants to be taken seriously. No matter how good they are or they think they are, they're just men, and "there's nothing more to it". She comes to the place alone and she leaves alone. It says it all: they're not qualified.
The text:
What's her statement? She wants to know the mettle they're made of, she's asking them to give her reason to believe there is more to them then meets the eye, i.e., she wants to know how much they really love her. Love, not sex, mind you. She wants to know if their character is manly enough to love her. That's the "satisfaction" she's talking about. Again, it's love, not sex. I first entitled this post "reading the labels" and then "cards on the table", taken from the lyrics. It's the same: she knows she can't change men's habits, i.e., the way they see women first and foremost as sexual objects. So, there's only one choice for her: to make sure they are truly in love with her, to read their nature (labels), to understand their game (cards), because her experience tells her that with men "what you get is what you see". As she's not liking what she's seeing, and she knows what she'll get from them, she doesn't want their "kind of love". That's why the final title of this post is "I ain't seen nothing yet", i.e., whatever that is, that's not love.
What's love? Yes, that's my main theme, and I've been writing a lot about it. Read my blogs entirely and you'll know, starting by asking yourselves what would you do for her, that woman you men desire so much. That's what this song is about, being one of its best qualities to be able to play with what people expect from a rock star ( a anything goes kind of person ) to deliver a very feminist message, but with no offense to men. She likes men. Real truthful men. It's a pity all she can see is boys, she doesn't want to play with and she cannot and must not trust.
