Twice a year, on the 22nd of February and on the 22nd of October, the Sun penetrated the Inner Sanctum of the great Temple of Abu Simbel to illuminate the statues of Ramses II, the Pharaoh, and of the God Amon-Ra. Thus, by the touch of the Perpendicular Sun, the human ruler of Egypt would be worthy of his divine protector and fortunate in all his deeds.
